The four behaviours of SharePoint search users and why these are important

SharePoint, Microsoft’s robust enterprise content management and collaboration solution, is currently used in some 78% of Fortune 500 companies. This astonishing adoption rate is a testament to the user-friendliness and value of the platform for both site administrators and users.

One feature that contributes to both of these characteristics is Best Bets, which gives managers the power to place laser-targeted results for defined keywords at the top of each SERP. To understand why this is so powerful, let’s examine the four general behaviours of search users and the reason these are very important in using Best Bets in SharePoint 2010.

How visual Best Bets enhance the SharePoint Search experience

One of the characteristics that have fostered the enormous growth of Microsoft SharePoint is its ability to provide robust content and document management, web development, and advanced search functionality without the need for extensive technical knowledge to implement and customise.

Using Best Bets and Synonyms in SharePoint 2010

You get a bunch of results which, given their context, could not possibly be related to what your colleagues are talking about. Then you search on your company’s SharePoint site. You get a bunch of documents that all refer to SRT, XKA and HNP, but not one that actually defines them. At this point, you give up and ask your colleague, who’s already been bothered a number of times today by this newbie and would just like to have a chance to work, thank you.

Turns out there is a relatively easy way for SharePoint administrators to deal with this (and other similar situations): using Best Bets and Synonyms.
